Grocery store Dutch vocabulary list

If you ever need to learn the words for food in a foreign country, just go to the grocery store and try to buy food you would normally. Some of them might be obvious... others, not so obvious. Here's a list of Dutch words I now know because of the grocery store! (Spelling may be a bit off)

DutchEnglish

There might be more than just this, but that's as much as I can remember off the top of my head. So don't worry, I am eating. ;)

Pictures!

I haven't really been publishing much here because it's a pain in the ass to add pictures. If you're just interested in pictures, head here: Pictures! I'll use this space instead to write about living here, etc.

Utrecht University (de Uithof campus)

I took many of these photos just wandering around Utrecht today... fun times.

This building is craaazy. I really want to go inside it and go in those areas connecting the two towers. Every time I walk past it, I careen my neck sideways to look at it. It seems like some kind of dorm... I wonder how the undergrads feel about it.

The de Uithof campus of Utrecht University is kind of on the outskirts of town, so it seems a bit rural... It's kind of nice though, with all the bike paths and green grass. What does kind of suck about it, though is that it's far away from most stores (including grocery stores, of which there is only one kind of sort of not really) so you have to walk/bike/bus to get to most things.

Sheep!!!! There's sheep on campus. Need I say more?

The View from My Window (Take that Andrew Sullivan!)

Utrecht, Netherlands 12:15 p.m.

I have arrived. More later.

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

I'm leaving on a jet plane... I know I'll be back again on July 3rd

I'm leaving for the Netherlands tomorrow at 4:55pm! I'll be coming right before Easter, which in retrospect probably wasn't the greatest idea since the Dutch have off on Good Friday and "Easter Monday"... oh, well, time to settle in.

I'll be on Skype if anyone wants to see/talk to me abroad. My skype name is aawiegel. Also, of course email or Facebook.

Look here for more on my adventures soon!

Short Stay Fellowship in Utrecht

I set aside this space to blog about my upcoming stay in Utrecht, Netherlands on a Short Stay Fellowship for Utrecht University. I got this fellowship almost by sheer luck! We were interested in the measurements of another research group headed by Prof. Thomas Roeckmann at the Institute for Atmospheric and Marine Research. They had published their results already in a paper, but they used derived values, when for our research we needed the absolute measurements (I'll leave it at that). My adviser emailed Thomas about these measurements, and he responded with not only some of those results but also an offer for the short stay fellowship to work on some unpublished results! I have never been to Europe before, and it would obviously be a great professional opportunity, so of course we filled out the application. I was then selected as one of the five recipients out of thirteen applicants! So now not only do I get a great opportunity to work with other scientists in the same field as I, but I also get to live in the Netherlands for three months from the beginning of April to the end of June! One of my friends from Berkeley is Dutch and went back to the Netherlands (she's working on her dissertation, though, so she might be busy), and another friend introduced me to his friend in Utrecht over Facebook, so we'll see what kind of people I meet from there. I hope to chronicle some of my adventures in the Netherlands (and Europe) in this blog, so stay tuned once April rolls around. :)
